Warhammer Online or Age of Conan…. the next WoW?

I’ll admit, I was a WoW junkie for a half of a year or so, but it all came to an abrupt end when the majority of my friends’ accounts got banned for gliding. For those of you who do not know what gliding is, it is automating actions in WoW so that you don’t have to engage in collecting money, exp, honor points, etc. When everyone hoarded over to Age of Conan, I did too, because I, apparently, have no free will. Actually, the true reason was that it actually looked kind of cool. It was being touted the next WoW and all, the graphics looked cool (I’m a tech nerd.. DX10!!!).. but after playing it a week and a half, I deemed it unfit to “replace” WoW as THE MMORPG of the world. Here are the few reasons why I thought so.

1. Way too buggy. Of course, most MMORPGs are buggy as hell on launch, but this was a little too hard to bear. For each of my friends, there was a unique and different problem. For me, it was that it BSODed when it was played on full screen, but it didn’t on windowed mode. *shrug

2. Lack of diverse gameplay elements. So far, my experience with AoC has been cool graphics, nice combat system, but way too much repetition. I would almost compare it to the Assassin’s Creed. I believe as more people join and patches come out, it will diversify and become more fun.

3. The gameplay is nowhere as continuous. And this may be the breaker for AoC, because although bugs can be fixed and gameplay elements added with patches, I doubt it is possible to do away with loading screens that come up every five seconds in AoC, compared to WoW’s once-in-a-year loading screen.http://www.criticalgamers.com/archives/pictures/WarhammerOnline.Escapist.jpg

I’ll have to try Warhammer Online when it comes out, but my trusty informant over at Ctrl+Alt+Del tells us faithful readers that a lot of the features have been deleted so close to launch. If I have the money, I may try it, but from what I’ve seen from recent MMO launches, Blizzard will hold its throne for a while. Also, according to Gamespot podcast I heard a while ago, Blizzard will make another MMO to “replace” WoW (in terms of graphics and overused storyline), so maybe Blizzard will hold the throne for a long long time.

Long live Blizzard! (please don’t kill me when you take over the world)
