Stray Thoughts on ACL: Day 1 (Mars Volta)

Music, My Life No Comments »

http://www.ecorazzi.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/acl-color-logo.jpgThis was my first year at ACL (Austin City Limits Music Festival). I absolutely loved it.. it was absolutely worth every cent of the 170 dollars for a 3-day pass. Some of the more ignorant were fussing about how (unlike last year, when they had Muse, Bob Dylan, and co. over) there weren’t enough big-name bands and how the Foo Fighters weren’t closer material. I had my doubts too, and when the heat started getting me and I got a little bit annoyed, i thought so too. As the festival went on, however, I found myself wanting more but unable to b/c I was so tired.

On the first day (Friday Night), I couldn’t attend the entire thing because (obviously) of school being over at 3:35. I was still able to catch Slightly Stoopid, N.E.R.D., and last but not least, Mars Volta.

http://www.showclix.com/event_pictures/Slightly-Stoopid.jpgSlightly Stoopid were ok, but I didn’t REALLY like them. They had the funk, but not the musicality or the pure, raw performance of other bands. N.E.R.D., on the other hand, had the music and the performance. I just don’t like the genre.

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g284/Durden_photo/con_mars_volta.jpgMars Volta can be simply described easily as absolutely ridiculous. My friends and I had looked forward to Mars Volta all day, so we stepped over some people sitting down to get pretty close to the front. Their sound completely blew everyone away (although some may have been due to the amount of pot they were smoking). They somehow managed to play like four songs in the course of 75 minutes, but I think I may have gone into a trance about a halfway through.

The vocalist, the guitarist, the drummer, and the wind guy all had great performance in them. It was as much of an eye candy as it was an ear candy. It hurt my ears a little bit though.

-Continued tomorrow with Day 2 (Beck)

Austin City Limits Festival: Foo Fighters, the Headliners

Korea, Music, My Life No Comments »

http://nationaleventrental.com/event_pics/c916d93f44f2d2cfba5e2596b81dc72a5.jpgIf you are a music fan (in general) in America, the chances are you’ve heard of Austin City Limits (or ACL) Festival in Austin, Texas every year. ACL hosts multitudes of artists from all around America (and the world!) and many come visit Austin to partake in it every year. Last year was supposedly the best year, with Bob Dylan (and his band), Wilco, and Muse only a part of a great lineup. Personally, this is my sixth year in Austin yet I have not been once, and this year (finally!) I will be attending for the first time.

The lineup may not show many big name bands like last year, but there are definitely great artists out there. I’m personally psyched about the headlining Foo Fighters. They’re one of my favorite bands, and I’m very excited to actually hear them live. (Due to my rather overprotective parents, this will be the first ever non-classical concert that I will attend) Among others of consideration are John Fogerty and the Mars Volta.

http://www.altasia.org/concert_info/pentaport_poster.gifCloser to home, there are couple of rock festivals that I will not be able to attend. The most famous of them is the Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival. Unlike last year, I didn’t see many big name bands (similar to ACL), but some of the more renowned Korean rock bands such as Crying Nut (who do have talent) will be headlining.

Alas, I will have to be satisfied with just watching the Foo Fighters this year. I hope that from next year (when I will not be boud by all this college bull) I will be able to attend as many rock festivals as my stamina will allow.

Most Narcissistic Song Ever

Korea, Music No Comments »

I wanted to quickly share with you the lyrics of a Korean song that has been a relative hit. It is THE most narcissistic song I’d ever heard yet it’s been such a success… what is the music industry coming to? Ha.

So Hot by 원더걸스(WonderGirls)

(Why do you keep glancing at me, why, why, why)
(Am I that pretty, tty, tty)
(Even so if you keep glancing at me)
(I get a little nervous)

(Whenever I pass by, by, by)
(Guys that turn their heads, heads, heads)
(The hot glances I feel from the back)
(What am I supposed to do, do, do)

*
i’m so hot                  (Self explanatory translation from here on)
i’m so fine
i’m so cool
i’m so so so hot hot

*

And It goes on for couple more verses. I must admit, the girls that perform this song are not exactly bad looking but still, need to downsize the ego a bit :-D.
